Chiang Mai (Thai ą¹ąøąøµąø¢ąøą¹ąø«ąø”ą¹) is the second-largest province of Thailand. It is in the country's north. Bordered by Chiang Rai to the northeast, Lampang and Lamphun to the south, Tak to the southwest, Mae Hong Son to the west, and Shan State of Burma to the north. The capital, Chiang Mai, is 685 km north of Bangkok.
The famous old city of Chiang Mai within its ancient walls in the mountainous northern part of Thailand, founded in 1296 and is now the second largest city after Bangkok. Chiang Mai is almost the only city where the old walls are still mostly intact.
Up from Chiang Dao Cave is Padung Village and the āLong Neck Karenā ethnic hill-tribe. The women wear brass rings around their necks, wrists and ankles. Explore, with respect, the village to get a feel of their culture and way of life, before supporting their income by purchasing a few souvenirs.
The highest peak in Thailand, rises 2,565 metres above sea level. A sanctuary for a wide range of animal species and perhaps the best place in Thailand for bird-watching, approximately 362 different species, many of which are not found anywhere else in Thailand.
